Step 1: Download and Print the Free Groundhog Craft Template
Download the Free Printable Template. You will be stapling the printed PDF to sheets of colored paper to cut out the shapes.
Step 2: Staple and Cut Out the Groundhog Craft Shapes
Once you have the print outs, staple them to construction paper and cut out the shapes you need.
Note: If you want to make this craft with a group of kids, you can staple the template to up to 10 sheets of copy paper, 5 sheets of cardstock or 5-8 sheets of construction paper.
So, did you know that you can staple together 10 pieces of copy paper and cut out 10 shapes at a time?! That’s mySECRETto fast & easy crafting. Stapling the paper is very important because it makes sure it doesn’t move as you cut. The more staples the better. Cardstock is the thickest so you may only be able to cut 5 sheets at a time.
Tip: While you’re cutting, if you cut off all parts of the pages that have staples, make sure to re-staple the sheets that are left.Whenever you’re cutting multiple sheets at a time, make sure they are always stapled together!
Step 3: How to Assemble the Paper Groundhog Craft
I recommend having a finished craft so the children can see what the final version will look like.
First, glue the hat onto the top of your groundhog.
Next, glue the black oval in the middle of his face to make the nose.
Use a marker to draw the eyes and the mouth onto your groundhog.
Glue the teeth onto the mouth you drew.
Optional: Glue the pink cheeks onto your groundhog.
Don’t forget to write your name on the back.

Phil shows us that living in the moment and working for a better future is not only the best way to escape a rodent-centric time loop, but also the best way to feel satisfied with your finances.
UPDATE (Feb. 2, 2024 10:30 a.m. E.T.): Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow this morning. Perhaps we will finally see an early spring this year (or perhaps not.) Much of the U.S. has had a heck of a January.
Remind children of the legend: On Groundhog Day, a groundhog pops out of its burrow. If it sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If it does not see its shadow, spring is near! Have kids line up behind a long table or something they can wiggle through or under.
But now you know that Groundhog Day (at least the roots of Groundhog Day) once celebrated an important event in the early life of Jesus. The day commemorates the first New Testament promise that Christ would also be the Savior of the Gentiles. And here's hoping the groundhogs see shadows a mile long today.
On their date, Phil uses his newly honed skills at sculpture to carve Rita's perfect likeness into a column of snow. He sincerely professes his love and affection for her. Climactic Moment: Phil awakens, believing the day has reset, only to discovery Rita lying in bed with him. The repetitive cycle is broken.
Geography: Groundhogs are found from the eastern and central United States northward across Canada and into Alaska. Lifespan: In the wild, groundhogs can live up to six years with two or three being average. In captivity, groundhogs reportedly live up to 14 years.
-- Punxsutawney Phil has made his prediction for 2024 Groundhog Day. The honorary groundhog did not see his shadow Friday morning, predicting that there will be an early spring. The day marks the 21st time Phil has not seen his shadow during the 138-year-old tradition.
Sprinkle granular repellents near a groundhog's burrow and also around your garden to form a barrier, or spray them on plants to make them distasteful. Human hair, pet fur and used kitty litter may also work, along with electronic spikes that use sound or vibration and motion-activated sprinklers.
Groundhogs are generally quite food motivated and take well to training with positive reinforcement. They are low maintenance in terms of husbandry, as they are easy to litter train. They do not all take well to handling during programming, and those that do tolerate handling may not do so for all handlers.
Fortunately, just as “Groundhog Day” dramatizes the problem, it also dramatizes the solution. In “Groundhog Day”, Bill Murray's character, tv weatherman Phil Connors, learns to care about other people. Specifically, he learns to care about the people around him–the people he sees every single day.
On this day, according to tradition, people watch the behavior of a groundhog (also called a woodchuck) to find out what the weather will be like for the next six weeks. If the animal sees its shadow as it comes out of its burrow, there will be six more weeks of wintery weather.
Tradition says Phil seeing his shadow is a sign that the next six weeks will bring wintry weather. If Phil doesn't see his shadow, it means an early spring. Groundhog Day isn't scientific (in fact, Punxsutawney Phil's weather predictions are wrong most of the time).
What does it mean if the groundhog sees its shadow? In theory, if Phil sees his shadow, we can expect six more weeks of winter weather. If Phil doesn't see his shadow, we can expect an early spring. Last year, the groundhog predicted a longer winter. This year, Phil did not see his shadow, predicting an early spring.
PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. -- Punxsutawney Phil has made his prediction for 2024 Groundhog Day. The honorary groundhog did not see his shadow Friday morning, predicting that there will be an early spring. The day marks the 21st time Phil has not seen his shadow during the 138-year-old tradition.
He didn't see his shadow, so that means an early spring is likely. Phil largely favors predicting six more weeks of winter, so this is unusual. You can watch in the video player above.
While many people have done the math on how long Bill Murray's character was trapped in the same day - various estimates range from about 500 years up to 10,000 years - the exact reason as to why he was stuck in the time-loop was never really explained.
